Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue…

By Mary Smith

Come to NHS Poetry Night because we want to see you!

The National Honor Society Poetry Night will be held on April 27 from 3:30 P.M. to 5 P.M.

I would encourage everyone that can come to come. If you have an interest in writing, poetry, or literature, I would recommend Poetry Night one hundred percent. It is so much fun to visit and listen to original creations as well as readings of famous poems.

Robert Frost

Because of our special event, I have a special treat. NHS member Kylee Shields, senior, has graciously allowed me to include one of her poems in this article as a little preview of the talent that we have at MCHS.

“Love Letter

By Kylee Shields

Her face was a love letter stained with tears.

The paper darkening and the ink spreading,

Her bottom lip quivered.

Empty sheets to keep her company.

The oak beneath her feet made her shiver,

Shadowed narrow halls seemed quiet.

The papers were wadded in the corner-

Littering the floor like so many discarded leaves in the fall.

She smoothed them out,

but the wrinkles still remained.

More tears pressed into the folds,

A rigid sponge of pale grey.

Months passed, the parchment began to dry.

Faded memories falling into the abyss.

New letters being written each day,

Her face a fresh parchment, smooth, lovely.”

Kylee is a part of the AP Literature and Composition class. In AP Lit, we just completed our poetry unit, drawing inspiration from Sylvia Plath and David Berman among others. If you attend Poetry Night and find yourself immersed in the world of words, I would recommend taking AP Literature as a senior. I would also recommend applying for National Honor Society membership. We do so many fun things and it’s all for the community.

Walt Whitman

Don’t forget about this opportunity to share. Poetry Night is all about embracing the fun of hearing and being heard. Make sure you attend, because it will be a really fun night!
