Anti-Stress Test

Welcome to High School, where you get to raise your hand to go to the bathroom, you have to wait in line for your OPAA meal and carton of milk, and you’re expected to plan your entire life. Enjoy your four year stay. Nothing to worry about.

Stress is common to high schoolers all over the world. Hopefully throughout this article, you can take a break. Kick your feet up, open a window (unless it’s raining, now you have more to worry about), drink some water, and take a break. A break? What’s that you may ask? Well, unfortunately that word seems like a foreign language to too many students.

According to a study done by NYU, “Many subgroups of youth experience high levels of chronic stress, to the extent it impedes their abilities to succeed academically, compromises their mental health functioning, and fosters risk behavior. Furthermore, this chronic stress appears to persist into the college years, and researchers warn it may contribute to academic disengagement and mental health problems among emerging adults.”

What brought this study to its conclusion, you may ask? Well, according to the professionals at NYU, and myself (yes, I’m a pro on stress too) too many kids’ schedules consist of waking up, going to school, homework, extracurriculars, and possibly a job. Then sleep, and repeat. Although this may sound like there is no way out, this is the opposite of the truth. There are extremely easy ways to combat stress, and they are tailored for teenagers.

  1. Listen to music. This could calm your mind, take some you time!
  2. Try to see the positive side. If you turned your homework in late, use that as motivation to do better next time.
  3. Laugh. It sounds like a joke (enjoy my pun), but it’s proven to help. Laughing increases oxygen and blood flow, which automatically reduces stress.
  4. Sleep. By sleep, I don’t mean sleep all day and get nothing done. Take a nap.  When you wake up, you’ll feel more energized and efficient.
  5. Log off of social media. Socialization can be fun, but there is such a thing as too much technology. Enjoy the people around you, not just the pictures of them in your phone.
  6. Eat Well. A constant diet of pizza and pop tarts is fast and easy, but it decreases energy levels, which will increase stress levels.
  7. Exercise. I know, I know, when you’re stressed nothing sounds more miserable than working out. Even 30 minutes can help with your stress significantly. This can be yoga, running, swimming, you name it.
  8. Don’t give up on your passions. In a busy schedule where you feel like you don’t get a break, realize you can only be a successful you if you’re YOU. Don’t feel as though you have to give up the things you love. They’re important!
  9. Don’t overload yourself. Don’t be afraid to say no sometimes. You’re not required to do anything, take a break!
  10. Finally, ask for emotional support. Don’t take on the entire world by yourself. Ask for help. Teachers and friends are great resources. After all, even Batman had Robin, right?
